The harbour city of Sydney

Blog

13th August 2015

Sydney, Australia with a purple and orange sunset

Sydney is Australia’s largest city, and the capital of New South Wales. The area of Sydney has been inhabited by Indigenous Australians for hundreds of years and now has a population of over 5 million.

Sydney is a city with magnificent, world-famous contemporary architecture. This is most noticeable at its harbour, which is a bustling area that contains the instantly recognisable Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Take a stroll around here, or dine at one of the many bars, cafes or restaurants, where you can sit and enjoy spectacular views over the harbour. If you are looking for the perfect place to snap photographs, then head for Mrs Macquarie’s Chair for the most perfect shots of the two landmarks.

The Rocks is another area of the city you shouldn’t miss. This is one of Sydney’s most historical areas, as it was previously home to the Gadigal aboriginal people, and later it was the first site of European settlement in Australia. There are over a hundred heritage buildings and sites in the narrow streets. It is also home to Sydney’s oldest surviving house, Cadman’s cottage, which was built in 1816.

Darling Harbour is another of the most visited spots in the city, as has plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, museums and entertainment venues. Here, you will find attractions such as Madame Tussaud’s, the Powerhouse Museum, the Australian National Maritime Museum, Sea Life Sydney Aquarium and Sydney Zoo.

If you have a head for heights and want to see city from an interesting perspective, then head for Sydney Tower for the SKYWALK experience. Sydney Tower is the tallest building in the city at 309 metres high, and allows tourists to visit the observation deck at the very the top. Extra brave visitors can have the SKYWALK experience and see the city from an alfresco glass-floor viewing platform.

There are plenty of beautiful beaches dotted in and around the city, the most famous of which is Bondi Beach. Manly also has a fantastic beach, and surfers will love Collaroy, Dee Why and Narrabeen – all of which can be found just north of the city.

From Sydney, you have easy access to other nearby cities. There’s so much to do in this area of Australia and, of course, you’re only a short flight from Melbourne, less than 2 hours by plane to Adelaide, and an hour and a half flight from Brisbane.

If you’re thinking of chartering a private jet to Sydney then there are several airports that you can choose from. Sydney Airport is just 5 miles from the city itself, and you’ll enjoy some stunning views as you come into land. Bankstown Airport is 16 miles away and Camden Airport is a little further at 44 miles.
